NEW DELHI – Indian regional airline FLY91 is buying 40 ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft in a deal valued at about $1 billion, as the country’s rapidly expanding aviation sector creates new opportunities for domestic connectivity, the Franco-Italian airplane manufacturer said Thursday.

FLY91 said in a separate release that the firm order is the largest for ATR aircraft globally by a regional airline, while ATR said it is its largest firm order in almost a decade. Deliveries are scheduled from 2027.

The agreement will support a major expansion by FLY91, which launched operations less than three years ago. The Goa-based airline plans to grow its fleet from six aircraft to 60 over the next five years as it expands its regional network across India.

FLY91 said the order will provide the scale to build a larger network connecting more unserved and underserved cities. The airline currently operates about 280 weekly flights to 12 cities, with a 13th destination scheduled to begin later this month.

India’s regional aviation expansion requires aircraft capable of operating short routes efficiently while keeping fares affordable, ATR said. The ATR 72-600 is suited to routes linking Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where demand for air travel is growing.

FLY91 Chairman Harsha Raghavan said the order reflects the airline’s confidence in India’s growth and the potential of regional aviation.

Founder and CEO Manoj Chacko said the ATR 72-600 offers the operating economics needed for FLY91’s network and that the order will serve as a catalyst for its next phase of expansion.

ATR CEO Nathalie Tarnaud Laude said FLY91’s commitment reflects the growing role of regional aviation in connecting India’s next generation of travelers.

ATR, based in Toulouse, France, is a joint venture between European aircraft maker Airbus and Italian aerospace company Leonardo.

The FLY91 agreement takes ATR’s 2026 order intake to 54 aircraft, already exceeding its total net orders for all of 2025.

NEW DELHI – Air India has named former Ethiopian Airlines Group chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam CEO and managing director, succeeding Campbell Wilson, as the Tata Group-owned carrier enters the next phase of its turnaround.

The airline said Wednesday that its board unanimously selected Gebremariam following a global search for a leader with experience in large-scale airline restructuring, operational performance and profitable growth.

Gebremariam led Ethiopian for more than a decade, overseeing a major expansion that transformed the carrier into Africa’s largest airline group by revenue and fleet size.

“It is a profound honour to be entrusted with leading Air India at such a historic moment in its journey,” Gebremariam said in a statement issued by the airline. “Air India carries an incredible legacy, and the opportunity to build a world-class global airline that reflects India’s extraordinary economic potential is uniquely exciting.”

Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the airline had completed its initial stabilization and integration phase under Wilson and was now focused on execution and expansion.

“Tewolde’s track record in building one of the world’s most efficient and profitable airline groups makes him uniquely suited to lead Air India,” Chandrasekaran said.

“His operational expertise, commitment to safety, and vision for hub development will be instrumental as we establish Air India as a premier global carrier.”

The airline said Gebremariam’s experience in expanding long-haul networks, developing hub operations and improving operational reliability would support its growth strategy.

Air India said details of Gebremariam’s onboarding and the leadership transition timeline will be announced later.

The carrier currently operates 198 aircraft and has ordered 570 new Airbus and Boeing jets as part of a multibillion-dollar fleet renewal and expansion program.

CSA“Congratulations ISRO! We’re happy to be on board,” the Canadian Space Agency tweeted Monday morning after India successfully launched a dedicated space observatory aimed at studying celestial objects.

The 1.5-tonne Astrosat was placed into orbit by the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, the Indian Space Research Organization said.

The PSLV also launched six foreign satellites, including a nanosatellite from the University of Toronto’s Space Flight Laboratory.

“This scientific satellite mission endeavours for a more detailed understanding of our universe,” ISRO said.

as3“Astrosat is designed to observe the universe in the visible, ultraviolet, low and high energy X-ray regions of the electromagnetic spectrum simultaneously with the help of its five payloads,” the space agency said.

One of those payloads, the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope, was built in collaboration with the Canadian Space Agency.

Dr. John Hutchings of the National Research Council Canada is the principal investigator for Canada’s contribution.

Hutchings co-led the development of the three Canadian detectors for the UVIT, CSA said.

“By exploring distant galaxies in ultraviolet light, we can study the formation and life cycle of galaxies, as well as star formation within galaxies. That’s one of the science drivers of this project,” it quoted Hutchings as saying.

AstrosatCanada’s participation in Astrosat entitles Canadian scientists to observation time on the satellite, the agency said.

The PSLV is the workhorse of the Indian space program. It has launched 84 satellites since 1994, including 51 for customers abroad.

Cial2Cial 5Cochin International Airport (COK) in southern India was opened just 16 years ago. This week it is celebrating a major environmental milestone – it has become the world’s first fully solar-powered airport.

More than 46,000 solar panels laid across 45 acres are generating 12MW of power, enough to run the airport smoothly.

“Now, Cochin airport will have 50,000 to 60,000 units of electricity per day to be consumed for all its operational functions, which technically make the airport absolutely power neutral,” its operator, Cochin International Airport Ltd., said in a release.

CIAL has been a trendsetter since its launch in the late 1990s. Cochin is the first Indian airport to be built under a public-private partnership model.

Cial1The company forecasts the project will help mitigate carbon emissions by more than 300,000 tonnes in the next 25 years. That is equivalent to planting three million trees, it said.

The busiest airport in Kerala state and the fourth largest in India, Cochin handled nearly seven million passengers in 2014-15.

The project was built by Bosch Energy and Building Solutions.
